Description
Summary:This paper looks at one of the first historical accounts written by a woman in the sixteenth century, The French History by Anne Dowriche. It aims at determining how an early modern English woman took over a traditionally male preserve. First it shows why this poem rightfully belongs to the historical genre and more specifically to Protestant historiography despite its versified form. It then goes on to demonstrate that it is part of a specific sub-genre, namely the martyrology. Finally, it questions the reading pact induced from its title and suggests that it is partly a lure as The French History also recounts what was happening in England at the time.
