description Abstract The BK virus is a member of the polyomavirus family. When the immune system is compromised, as in patients undergoing chemotherapy after hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplantation, the virus is reactivated leading to haemorrhagic cystitis. The BK virus is rarely seen in autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation compared to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Early diagnosis and treatment of viral cystitis may prevent significant morbidity of haemorrhagic cystitis. Herein, we present a literature review and four case reports of haemorrhagic cystitis due to BK virus infection in three cases of allogeneic and one case of autologous stem cell transplantation.
