| description | Based on a monograph conducted in Montorgueil, a gentrified district of the historic center of Paris, this article analyses how forms of attachment to a place constitute a support and vector of commitment in a conflict of proximity (in that case, a mobilization of local residents against the opening of a fast-food). This conflict is considered as an experience through which attachment is felt and tested. The following question has guided our research: how can this link to a place - plural by definition since it has to do with the individual and the emotional - lead to collective mobilization? The author submits the hypothesis of the coexistence of a plurality of attachments, which can extend beyond a local scale and lead to cooperation for the defense of a place. First, the author considers the socio-spatial context of the conflict and presents how attachment to this place can be analyzed by focusing on the existing academic literature, observations and fieldwork interviews. Secondly, the author presents three forms of attachment to a place that have emerged from the empirical material, through the study of the repertoire of justifications mobilized by actors in the test of this conflict of proximity: symbolic, elective and civic place attachment. The symbolic attachment to a place refers to its representations, based on the promotion of tangible and intangible heritage, which is source of distinction. The elective one refers to frequentations, characterized by peer’s aggregation and discriminating segregation. Civic attachment goes beyond the defense of a local space as a place where citizens' demands can be expressed. Through the concept of place attachment, this article emphasizes on the fact that a spatial experience of mobilization does not necessarily depend on the pre-existence of a local group. The diversity of emotional bonds that bound individuals to a place can coexist and lead to forms of cooperation, with various forms of engagement. This paper aims at contributing to the approach of place attachment, a central concept that opens up to the possibility of grasping a spatial dimension of social bonds. |
