The June 13 demonstration in the capital marks the left's attempt to vainly transpose the parliamentary struggle into the streets. But the supporters of a democratic and social Republic were defeated and had to face terrible repression from their conservative adversaries who built « the reduced Republic (June 1849-December 1851) » through a series of structural laws on education and universal suffrage. |
