Description
Summary:Situated near to the southern limits of the Duchy of Normandy, during the 11th and 12th centuries the towns of Verneuil and Breteuil (Eure) developed a religious architecture quite uncharacteristic of local traditions. The architectural tendency – the first levels at least – is notably related to the Anglo-Norman tradition. None of the innovating characteristics of continental architecture, Norman or French, are apparent in the parish churches of these towns, one of which was nevertheless a great building project directed by King Henry I Beauclerc. This particularity seems to directly illustrate the problems of authority that the sovereign constantly met with in Normandy.
