description A damage identification method based on CMCM and L<sub>1</sub> regularization is proposed. Firstly, the basic principle of cross modal method and the characteristics of L<sub>2</sub> regularization and L<sub>1</sub> regularization are introduced. The proposed method was then validated with a steel frame structure in a laboratory. The results show that the combination of CMCM and L<sub>2</sub> regularization can easily lead to misjudgment of undamaged elements, while L<sub>1</sub> regularization in CMCM can identify structural damage more accurately. Even if only the first measurement mode is used, the L<sub>1</sub> regularization technique can be used to solve the CMCM equation to accurately identify the damage of the frame structure.
