| description | Beyond the current crisis in France’s hospital emergency services, we question the daily operation of a Call Reception and Regulation Center within the SAMU in Marseille, France. With observations and data from ethnographic fieldwork along with a dialogue with an emergency medical doctor, our writing here is in two voices. We focus on the issues around qualification : by whom, when and how, is the degree of urgency or crisis situations to be assessed, in a limited time. We put these issues into the perspective according to how they are taken into account : by what devices, with what listening, according to what collective organization ? We highlight a part of the invisible activity that, nevertheless, contributes to the qualification and categorization of the emergency. In addition, we examine the unique modalities, which lead to a medical decision subject to a narrative by the applicant in crisis, first model of an emerging telemedicine. Situations presented here help give a more general account of the crisis situation in the health sector.communication, emergency qualification, telemedicine, medical regulation |
