| description | The present study aims to investigate the urban development and recent spatial changes in the city of Iğdır by discussing issues related to its growth and development. Referred to as a “custom-house station village” in the Western travel books of the mid-19th century, Iğdır was settled within a limited geographical space until the middle of the 20th century. However, especially after the 1990s, the population increased due to over-capacity migration from rural areas and the urban area of the city grew rapidly. The push and pull factors of the rural areas of Turkey, as well as in Iğdır, played an important role in this expansion. Spatial development and urban growth in the city mainly affected the fertile agricultural lands. In Iğdır, the ratio of residential areas increased approximately 5% in 1977, 11% in 1989, 14% in 2000, 25% in 2010, and about 30% in 2018 As a result of unplanned spatial development, unplanned use of fertile agricultural areas and unplanned growth in Iğdır, agricultural areas have been replaced by primarily residential, service and recreation uses. Recently, the geographical appearance of Iğdır, which was known as “Green Iğdır” until the 1990s, has substantially changed by spatial expansion and rapid population growth. It is on the brink of losing its status as a “great plain conservation area.” |
