description The present study re-examines the question of the composition of the workshop of the so-called ‘Astrapades’ through a palaeographic analysis of the inscriptions that accompany either their signed works or those attributed to them. The study was prompted by a number of unanswered questions, such as: why did the painter of the Virgin Peribleptos, Michael Astrapas, suddenly begin styling himself as ‘Michael Eutychiou’ in his later works in other monuments? The study’s findings show that the so-called ‘Astrapades’ did not consist only of Michael Astrapas and Eutychios, as is generally believed, but actually constituted an artistic workshop with numerous members that included three painters with the baptismal name Michael.
