description Abstract: This article analyses the first novel by Jordanian poet and journalist Amjad Nasser (1955-2019), Ḥaythu lā tasquṭ al-amṭār (Land of No Rain, 2010), through a methodology that combines the narratological study of the text with the socio-biographical approach to the literary fact. The book, which fits into the tradition of Exile literature, presents itself as a work halfway between the pseudo-autobiographic novel and the dystopian narrative, displaying an alternative geography of the contemporary Arab world: here, Jordan takes the fictional name of Ḥāmiyya, a country ruled by a military dynasty which symbolise the Hashemites. The aim of the study is to disclose the connections lying between the novel and the political context underpinned by the protagonist’s committed trajectory. This will eventually show that the world of literary fiction can become a privileged space for exiles to counter hegemonic discourses about nationhood and reinvent their identity.
