Description
Summary:The diasporic relationship linking the descendants of the large migration waves of the turn of the 20th century and the inhabitants of the localities of origin in Guangdong province (China) is weakening. Exclusively discursive and cultural approaches to diasporas give only scant consideration to the effective practice of social and cultural connections and to the historical process of maintaining diasporic ties. An approach that is attentive to diachronic dimensions, social morphology and to persons own understandings allows accounting for the distensions and even the ruptures of diasporic linkages – instead of assuming that they will last – as well as for deviations from the proclaimed ideal of their maintenance. Based on a case study of the Chinese community in French Polynesia and one of their villages of origin in China, this article shows how the diasporic relationship is dissolving, and possibly being put to an end.
