Summary: | This article examines the health of care givers working in a residential establishment for dependent elderly people. More precisely, it examines the care relationship which, according to the burnout model, is involved in the caregivers’ disorder. We reconsidered the relationship by analyzing the caregivers’ activity through a combination of work-clinic and ergonomic theories. We studied the effects of temporal constraints on the relationships with residents, and showed that protecting the residents’ humanity is the main issue at stake in the relationship. We likewise analyzed the activity reshaping processes that operate in the relationship. The article concludes with a discussion of work organization, changes in caregiver activities, and research intervention in the field of occupational health. |
