| Summary: | One of the basic instruments to protect countries is custom duty. Tariffs have multiple functions to perform, the most important of which is undoubtedly the economic function. After World War I, i.e. in the initial period of the existence of the Republic of Poland, various customs offices were established, which, in addition to the imposed and collected duties, were also to protect the Country’s borders against the penetration of hostile elements, including armed diversionary groups, arms transfers, thus defending the safety of citizens and at the same time provide the state budget with a significant inflow of means of payment. The article presents the chronology of the formation of the Polish custom duty system in 1919-1924, ranging from rare and short-term forms of customs protection, to stable border security, and the establishment of the Border Protection Corps in 1924. |
