| description | Those countries who truly grasp the significance of geopolitical power can be said to have learned, in direct or indirect ways, the necessity of a detailed examination of the changing and unchanging elements of geopolitics. The unchanging elements of geopolitics can be concretely and explicitly planned whereas the changing elements can only be tackled by systematic and long term planning and generally in a covert manner. This can be best exemplified by the population building of Russia in Central Asia after the 19th century. It is ascertained that Russia attempted to spread its mentality and social lifestyle across Central Asia by creating population clusters, in other words, they utilized one of the changing elements of geopolitics, namely population, trying to extendits sphere of influence. Having begun to gradually cultivate its social, economic, and cultural influence in the region since a century before, the Russian influence is still persistent despite its withdrawal from the region. Though we can observe a re-shifting of the demography in the Central Asian republics following the decline of the hegemony of the Soviet Union, this study still tries to draw attention to the fact that one should be cautious about such demographic engineering attempts on either a regional or global scale with all their pluses and minuses. |
