description | The Otomi of Mexico have a differentiated way of inscribing into the field of the nychthemeron the specific status of material objects and each human being’s particular ontology. Household artefacts that are static during the day undergo metamorphoses at night, and are attributed an agency similar to that of humans, who can in turn adopt the status of objects or predatory animals during this sequence. These status changes end in the first hours of the day. I will describe how the wilding of the world of objects in the dark goes hand-in-hand with the construction of ritual structures in which the deceased cyclically return in “nocturnal” episodes of the day, when the sun reaches its zenith. |
