Description
Summary:During the French 2022 presidential campaign, the Twitch streaming platform was used by France Télévisions, which offered a sequence – "20h22, la suite sur Twitch" – during which journalist Samuel Etienne asked the invited candidates questions submitted by the public in the chat. This article establishes a typology of the uses of chat – based on the question, the conversation and the reaction – and proposes a categorization of commentators, according to their preferred forms of intervention. The study shows that the stream elicits various criticisms from the public, concerning the candidates, the journalists or the system itself. These criticisms remain civil and can even be argued by example or testimonial. We identified "super-participants", in contrast to a random sample, who were distinguished by their high level of activity in the chat and the fact that each of them took on a specific role as activist, fan or facilitator.
