Summary:The article focuses on the urban residential segregation in Russian cities under modern conditions. The author shows the evolution of gated communities in Russia. The main causes and the motives for gated communities’ emergence and proliferation are analysed. Different types of the gated communities are considered and their peculiarities are revealed. The paper examines the development of gated communities in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and their expansion to regions and large cities. The gated communities’ impact on urban life is analysed. The author reviews opinions about the gated communities’ development given by developers, architects, urbanists, and experts.
