ANALYSIS OF AIR QUALITY IN TELEORMAN BY MEANS OF BIOMONITORS-LICHENS
Air pollution means the presence in the atmosphere of substances foreign to its normal composition, which depending on the concentration and time of action cause disturbances in the natural balance, affecting the health and comfort of humans or the living environment of flora and fauna (Rusanescu...

Summary: | Air pollution means the presence in the atmosphere of substances foreign to its normal
composition, which depending on the concentration and time of action cause disturbances in the
natural balance, affecting the health and comfort of humans or the living environment of flora and
fauna (Rusanescu, M et al., 2018). Lichens are often used as bioindicators in biomonitoring of
heavy metal pollution. These organisms are sensitive to heavy metal pollution and can accumulate
significant amounts of metals in their tissues. The aim of the current work is to bring an
innovative contribution to the study of pollutants through bioindicators. Starting from the
hypothesis that lichens are symbiotic organisms formed between an alga and a fungus that have
the ability to store large amounts of heavy metals and from the fact that their thallus can be
analyzed chemically, I chose to carry out a comparative study to determine the amount of heavy
metals in the atmospheric air and to compare the values found with those obtained through
conventional measurements. In carrying out the study, I ordered the selection of the area, namely
Teleorman county - in 5 urban points, the sampling of lichen samples from the Troianul Forest -
Teleorman, their transplantation in 5 measurement points on the bark of some trees at a height of
1.50 m and their application with natural resin and the exposure period is 30 days between
October 11, 2021 and November 11, 2021. After the expiration of the exposure period, the
samples were collected and sealed, later dried and processed to be subjected to a chemical
analysis. Following the results obtained, we concluded that these bioindicators present an
increased effectiveness in indicating the degree of pollution, indicating the values of the pollutants
very precisely, recording very small differences between the values determined with the help of
bioindicators and those determined conventionally.
Here are some methods used in the determination of heavy metals in lichens:Chemical analysis:
monitoring the accumulation - By measuring the concentrations of heavy metals accumulated in
lichen tissues, the degree of pollution can be assessed. This is done by taking lichen samples from
different locations, including unpolluted reference areas, and comparing the concentrations of
heavy metals found in the samples.
