description The history and the particularities of the profession of notary, which combines liberal exercise and delegation of a public service, have helped to crystallize the image of an asymmetrical and dual relationship between this professional, who is also a notable, and his client. However, the survey shows the complexity of a relationship in which multiple actors interact. The meetings with clients, valued by professionals who mention their skills of « pédagogues » (teacher) of law are also marked by uncertainty. “Trust” implies both the one of the client in the professional and the one of the professional in his clients on whom he has a “guilty knowledge”. The investigation finally reveals the ambivalence of an asymmetrical legal service relationship, which arouses resistance from the laymen, and avoidance by notaries. This impartial and autonomous « magistrat de l’amiable » (amicable magistrate) delegates to his employees a demanding activity that tends to turn into a customer relationship.
