Description
Summary:What is the place of the cosmos in stories as full of humanity as those of the Novelas ejemplares? Precious little if the cosmos is defined, according to its ancient etymology, as the place of order, or as an unstable equilibrium between the four elements. The article examines this lack of an elementary system in the novels and questions the reasons for it. It reveals a world separate from the other elements, conceived as a flat expanse, which can be traversed by essentially mobile people, or as resistant but manipulable matter, on which certain people imprint shapes born of their sick subjectivity —a new literary terrain marked by cosmography rather than by the cosmos, for a genre which Cervantes, in his prologue, declares to be decidedly modern.
