Summary:This paper analyses the process of modernization of the Moroccan Jewry during the Colonial period, highlighting its specific aspects in comparison with those of East-European Judaism in the 19th century. In addition to the different historical circumstances, this article emphasizes the particular structure of colonial society as well as the role played by French Judaism as a mediator between European modernity and the Sephardic tradition.
