Effects of total dietary silage with corn and citric acid byproducts on lactating cow intake, digestibility, blood parameters, ingestive behaviour, and performance

This study aimed to evaluate supplying strategies for byproducts, mycelium, raffinate, corn straw, and Goldenmill® in diets of lactating crossbred cows on intake and digestibility of nutrients, blood parameters, ingestive behaviour, milk production, and composition. Fifteen ¾ Holstein × ¼ Gyr cows w...

description This study aimed to evaluate supplying strategies for byproducts, mycelium, raffinate, corn straw, and Goldenmill® in diets of lactating crossbred cows on intake and digestibility of nutrients, blood parameters, ingestive behaviour, milk production, and composition. Fifteen ¾ Holstein × ¼ Gyr cows were used with an average initial weight of 608 ± 145 kg and 80 ± 5 days of lactation. Three experimental diets were evaluated: a control diet without inclusion of corn and citric acid byproducts; a complete – Total Mixed Ration (TMR) diet in natura, containing corn and citric acid byproducts; and a complete ensiled TMR diet containing corn and citric acid byproducts. The forage: concentrate ratio in the three experimental diets was approximately 36:64 on a dry matter (DM) basis. Cows fed control diets and in natura TMR diets produced 23.20% more milk compared to animals that received TMR ensiled with corn and citric acid byproducts. The feed efficiency of cows that received the ensiled TMR was 22.83% higher than the other diets (average of 1.25 kg of milk kg−1 DM). Considering aspects related to management, dry matter intake and nutrients, blood parameters, milk production, and composition, the in natura TMR diet.
