Description
Summary:Recent years has seen the emergence of a new kind of workplace, the coworking space (CS). In 80 countries, worldwide, 2,500 spaces had been identified, as of February 2013. The coworking phenomenon is the outcome of the rise of a digital economy, informational ubiquity and the emergence of a new “creative class.” Coworking spaces are designed to host creative people and entrepreneurs who endeavour to break their isolation and find a convivial environment that encourages meetings and collaboration. At the beginning of the movement, CS creations were purely private initiatives. Since then, the concept has attracted interest from media, and CS have been incorporated into larger public programs aimed at the development of the “creative city,” which often leads to the regeneration of decayed industrial neighborhoods. CS are the outcome of the blurring of boundaries between technological, economic and social categories. So their sustainability and growth potential deserve to be scrutinized. Do they signal the emergence of a new workplace landscape or will CS be confined to merely a showcase role in urban renewal projects?
