description Shenmu-Shuozhou railway is an important heavy haul freight railway line in China. Heavy haul trains run in harsh environments with great difficulties in operation. Train surge seriously affects train operation smoothness and safety. To address the surge of trains running on Shenmu-Shuozhou railway, the signal characteristics when surge occurs on heavy duty trains were analyzed, and a train multi-particle dynamic model based on elastic damping couplers was established. In addition, the running state of heavy haul trains with and without surge was simulated. A finite set predictive control method was proposed to eliminate the surge of heavy haul trains. The simulation verifies that the predictive control can reduce the speed fluctuation and the maximum coupler force during the surge of trains.
