| Summary: | Abstract: The development of exotic naturalist knowledge in the 18th century confronted scholars with the limits of European methods and epistemological frameworks. How to describe and name natural productions that sometimes have no relation with already known species? How can they be included in classifications? What is the value of a centuries-old indigenous name, compared to a Latin name invented for European science? Michel Adanson developed during his trip to Senegal (1749-1754) extremely original answers to these questions, which involved understanding local knowledge and attempting to integrate it into European knowledge.
