Summary
The Chronicle of Wincenty called Kadłubek has been the subject of research of many scholars treating different subjects. It is also considered one the oldest monuments of Polish legal thought. Some scholars (J.N. Janowski, H. Zeissberg, O. Balzer, E. Seckel) proved it contained a lot of fragments testifying the author’s knowledge of Roman Law which certainly influenced his contemporaries’ and descendants’ legal awareness. Due to its rhetorical values, the Chronicle became an obligatory reading in the Cracovian Academy (Department of Rhetorics) and later in cathedra and parish schools where jurisprudence was also studied. It has to be underlined that Kadłubek contributed greatly to spreading the knowledge of Roman Law in pristine Poland but he cannot have been exceptional because his argument had to be understood and welcome by others.
