description When Christian missionaries arrived in Togo, they found there a mosaic of peoples with diverse cultures. These people believed, among other things, in the forces of nature, the indestructibility of the soul, the personification of nature. The missionaries were given the duty to evangelise so that they turn from their gods to engage with the God of the Bible. But they understood that they could not succeed without making literacy an unavoidable preamble. Therefore, they invested in education and later collaborated with the colonial administration, not without difficulties. The results were satisfactory so that the colonial administration, whether German or French, acknowledged that without the collaboration of missions, many Togolese would have been outside of education. This mixed collaboration has contributed to the formation of the intellectual elite, which has played an important role in the decolonization of Togo and beyond.
