Identification of contemporary forms of Polish patriotism.
Material and methods
The research method used is a critical analysis of the literature on the subject. Particular importance is given to statistical data generated by various research centers.
The analysis of primary and secondary materials was carried out on social media at the turn of 2021 and 2022. The analysis covered 419,211 publications, the reach of which was estimated at 949 million.
Results
• Nearly 50% of entries (48%) were caused by discussions about politics and current events. People often use terms related to patriotism to describe and evaluate behaviors, people and attitudes.
• In the case of people, the rate of posts relating to politics and current events in the country was over 60% (vs. 9% of content on fan pages). Often, words referring to patriotism were applied to opponents in political disputes, and these statements were often negative in nature.
• Most of the content on fanpages concerned historical anniversaries and events organized around them or to promote history.
• Nearly ¼ of the posts concerned historical events, anniversaries, celebrations, and speeches promoting history.
• Nearly ¾ of the posts (74%) were written by people. Men were 3 times more likely to be the authors of posts (49% vs. 16% of all content). However, men's entries were more often negative and less likely to have a positive sentiment than women's posts
Conclusions
It is justified to study various forms of manifestations of patriotism of specific groups at a specific time. It is concluded that patriotism is perceived as a current value, not a universal one. Shaping a sense of patriotism is an element of building the resilience of society. The need to monitor the state of attitudes (also in social media) and education become particularly important here. |
