Description
Summary:The article features an interview with Marie L., a call centre employee working for a large French mutual insurance company. It is part of a broader survey about people’s sense of recognition at work. The issues raised by this employee, caught between the loss of her senses, a feeling of degradation and the fear that things would be even worse elsewhere, feed into a variety of themes found in the sociology of work (including forms of rationalisation, occupational health, temporalities, professional relationships and labour market representations). Rather than using recognition as an analytical category, the idea here is to leverage its polysemy and plurality of purposes, thereby weaving a thread throughout the survey that encourages respondents to talk about their situation at work and develop a critical understanding of it – restricting in this way researcher’ ability to impose pre-conceived categories.
