description The sum of needs: rescripts, information and supplications (Tuscany, 1550-1750)Based on the supplications sent to the Grand Duke of Tuscany and forwarded to the courts of the Governor of Livorno and of the Consuls of the Sea of Pisa, which were both competent in civil, commercial and maritime matters, this article aims to analyze the different stages that lead from the request of the supplicant to the rescript of the sovereign. First of all, this work examines the legal value of rescripts and the institution of the Consulta, a collegiate body set up in 1600 to inspect the many requests sent to the prince and to regulate extraordinary decisions. The article, then, analyses the significant stage of the so-called procedure of information (informazione), usually requested from a competent jurisdiction to explain the reasons and the stakes of a specific claim. In doing so, the article distinguishes between two broad sets of supplications: the supplications of authorisation, that generally seek to obtain or confirm exceptions, and the supplications of procedure, which are part of a dispute. The latter show how supplications could be a key instrument to administer justice during the Early Modern period, that is to say not only to solve disputes, but also to define jurisdictional competences between different institutions and tribunals. Supplications gather together a multidimensional formulation of intentions and normative conceptions that question, through precise and situated claims and demands, the validity of norms.
