These initiatives clashed against Latin American States’ will to keep control upon these commemorations, leading, in 2007, to the creation of the Grupo Bicentenario. This multilateral authority reunites the national commissions of nine Republics which, between 2009 and 2011, celebrate 200 years of independence (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Equator, El Salvador, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela). This confrontation reached its height when in 2008 the Spanish proposition to create an «Iberoamerican commission of bicentenaries», including Latin America and Spain, was rejected. |
