Description
Summary:As far as French geography is concerned, the 1970’s represent a time of significant transformations. New topics emerged and among them, the one of mental representations of space and places. Many geographers began to carry out some research on this topic. This article aims to study the emergence of this research and to show that it was carried out by several little communities and not by isolated individuals. However, it was a field that remained quite heterogeneous, especially when we consider the variety of the epistemological positions defended by these geographers. We can identify, in the 1970’s and in the 1980’s, a kind of « forum » where research circulates and where geographers discuss some issues related to mental representations. Many of them focus on individuals and on their point of views, whereas some refuse this kind of approach and prefer a much more holistic approach. This leads us to underline that research on mental representations in geography is a way more complex field than it often seems to be.
