Description
Summary:Since the Paris Agreement in 2015, various stakeholders have published energy outlook scenarios for France, Europe and the world. They highlight the fact that energy consumption in developed countries is unsustainable. It needs to be brought under control, or even reduced, and this means changing lifestyles. The notion of sufficiency has made its appearance. This article compares French, European and global scenarios. A global qualitative study is first proposed. Each scenario is analysed using a grid of 12 indicators to construct a lifestyle evolution index that gives an idea of the scale of the changes envisaged. A quantitative study is also carried out for the French scenarios. Although a comparison of the different scenarios is difficult because of the lack of uniformity in the methodologies used, a growing number of them include changes in lifestyles by 2050. The sufficiency levers identified are common, but they imply societal choices involving sometimes radical changes in certain uses, which raises the question of the feasibility of such trajectories. Research avenues are indicated. For example, the industry and the supply side of sufficiency, field studies of communities undergoing or choosing sobriety, questions about the paradigms for modelling society in economic models, and the construction of desirable collective narratives are proposed. This research should include a wide range of disciplinary fields.
