Description
Summary:After pioneering experiments in 1998-2003, twenty-eight monastic sites in Burgundy and Franche-Comté were the subject of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys in 2010-2016, in order to identify their surface area, environment and topography – cloister, earlier churches, etc. –, estimate stratigraphic thickness, and locate specific structures – vaults, privileged tombs, etc. The results, which constitute an additional documentation layer and an approach to the buried potential, have been used to develop strategies for survey and excavation work. The heuristic confrontation between « geophysical image » and « archaeological reality » helps to define the limits of this method, which is the most workable for the period, especially for this Early medieval type of structure and « archi-stratigraphic environment ». This paper presents several results and observations based on nine cases chosen for their demonstrative or significant nature among the twelve sites surveyed or partially excavated following geophysical surveys – an enlightening perspective that forms part of an essential methodological « feedback ».
