| Summary: | Recent interest in the generation of neural lineages by differentiation of embryonic stem cells arises from the opportunities represented by a developmentally normal, unlimited source of material that can be manipulated genetically with precision. Several experimental approaches, which differ conceptually, in the route of differentiation and the characteristics of the resulting cell population have been reported. In this review we undertake a comparative analysis of these approaches and their suitability for experimental investigation or implantation. |
