Description
Summary:Negociating tooth and nail. Catherine de Medici on the brink of civil wars. From a series of fifteen letters we will analyze the attempts made by Catherine de Medici in 1562, 1568, 1579-1580 and 1585 to save the peace. While war was brewing or as weapons had already sometimes shoot off, she was still trying to bring peace back and negotiated by letters or de visu to be heard. She made the most of the fact that starting the war was not always synonymous with starting to fight, especially during the wars of religion where there never was any declaration of war. Thus, the space created became for her a space of negotiation that she tried to leverage to restore calm.
