Monitoring water quality in Beni Haroun Dam Northeastern Algeria: Application of Water Quality Index (WQI), Pollution Index (PI), and statistical analyses

Despite the importance of Beni Haroun Dam as a vital water resource in Northeastern Algeria, comprehensive assessments of its water quality using integrated indices like the Water Quality Index (WQI), the Pollution Index (PI), and advanced statistical analyses remain scarce. This study addresses thi...

description Despite the importance of Beni Haroun Dam as a vital water resource in Northeastern Algeria, comprehensive assessments of its water quality using integrated indices like the Water Quality Index (WQI), the Pollution Index (PI), and advanced statistical analyses remain scarce. This study addresses this gap by providing a detailed evaluation to support sustainable water management efforts by applying two critical indices: WQI and PI. Water quality parameters including (PO₄, NH₄, NO₂, NO₃, DIN, SiO₄, SO₄, Cl, NaCl, Na, EC, TDS, pH, Sal, Tem, Tur) were measured at 20 sites within the dam. The data revealed that most sites exhibited a WQI classification of ''Good'' (mean WQI = 70.69–83.29), except for sites S11, S13, S14, S15, S16, S17, S18, and S20, which were classified as ''Poor'' or ''Unsuitable.'' Correspondingly, the PI for most sites was categorized as ''Insignificant pollution,'' whereas sites S13, S14, S15, S16, S17, and S18 indicated ''Low'' to ''Very High'' pollution levels. The study provides precise data on the ecological status of the dam, offering a decision-making tool for water resource managers. It contributes to sustainable water management by identifying risk areas and supporting the implementation of protective measures.
