| description | The article examines the consequences of the forced displacement of the residents of São José Island, in Tocantins, due to the construction of the Estreito Hydroelectric Power Plant. Based on Saskia Sassen's theory of “expulsions”, the study analyzes how the process of relocating residents in the Mirindiba settlement intensified pre-existing vulnerabilities, dismantling essential social and economic networks for these communities. The qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research reveals that the displacement not only resulted in the loss of land, but also aggravated social marginalization and fragmented community relations. The study highlights the prioritization of corporate interests over the needs of local populations, perpetuating cycles of poverty and exclusion. The authors conclude that future public policies must protect the rights and integrity of populations affected by large developments in order to avoid perpetuating these vulnerabilities and social exclusion. |
