description The construction of small irrigation systems in the high Andean valleys of Venezuela has had radical consequences for the whole region. These high valleys provide the urban centres with vegetables of the type found in temperate climates. They have become expansion points, with the multiplication of agricultural exploitations and employments and have encouraged the emergence of numerous services. Even in a country where 85% of the population is urbanised, and where the general orientations have neglected agriculture for a long time, the continuity of a well-structured rural society permits the valorisation of opportunities for development when they appear.
