description The tourist system started to emerge as an organised phenomenon in Barcelona and Catalonia in the early years of the 20th century. Initially, the actions and initiatives take place against the backdrop of regionalism and regenerationism. In this context, a number of works were published that sought to influence the territory’s tourism policies: Barcelona cosmopolita (1908) by Gonçal Arnús, Organització Turística de Catalunya (1932) by Antoni Muntanyola, and El problema del turismo (1932) by Xavier Calderó. Although they derive from different ideologies, these texts share in common the idea that tourism is a public affair and link it to a patriotic rhetoric. Tourism is considered an identity-constituting phenomenon, insofar as it contributes to a culture’s definition (projection and expression). All three works present a powerful territorial and class worldview and are written by authoritative voices, power brokers, who generate dominant discourses and hegemonic categories of tourism. This paper analyses the three works’ content and reflects on their impact on tourism policies.
