description As one of the advanced complications of end-stage renal disease, secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) leads to many clinical syndromes such as bone lesions, vascular and soft tissue calcification, seriously affecting the quality-of-life of patients and increasing their risks of fractures, cardiovascular events and even death. Currently SHPT is managed by drug therapy and surgery. Parathyroidectomy is indicated for refractory SHPT patients. This review summarizes the latest pathogenetic mechanisms of SHPT, the choices of different treatments and the complications and managements after SHPT. It was intended as a theoretical basis for treating SHPT.
