Description
Summary:The post-industrial city of Saint-Etienne suffers from its unattractive and shrinking image. Whilst the local/traditional industry was badly hurt when deindustrialization hit the town in the early 70s and the population decreased dramatically in the 90s – leading to a surge in abandoned housing up even in central areas – the council has now set out to stimulate the town’s attractiveness using re-imaging politics. The focus of Saint-Etienne is shifting towards cultural and creative industries in an effort to draw companies and investments, as well as improve its demographic. This paper is setting out to question the city’s attempts of renewal by exploring urban politics toward the Cité du Design, former industrial site, and to show the real effects of this flagship project on its urban surroundings and its possible consequences on the local economic development.
