description The Romanesque school of sculpture on wood from Burgundy developed on a short period of time, mainly during the first half of the 12th century, and this local tradition is intertwined with several trends. The melodic quality of the line and the decorative and visionary solutions of the Autun language are the most original results among the stylistic languages of this precise moment of history. Four wood sculptures are emblematic for the understanding of a specific school of sculptors that worked on wood as well as stone. The Christ of Courajod, the Christ in deposition from Pisa, the Madonna from Autun and the Christ stored in Cleveland illustrate the cultural and aesthetical refinement of the sculptors from Cluny. The artists from the Autun sphere accomplish an expressive synthesis of a strong poetical impact.
