| description | For most of the 1960s and 1970s, Algiers, the capital of Algeria, an independent state since July 1962 after a long and bloody war with France, became, by design of the progressive, third-world, pan‑Africanist and socialist leaders who then governed it, a unique place of exile, reception and logistical support that received thousands of combatants and dozens of organisations fighting against various dictatorships, imperialism and colonialism. This was the reason why, based on an idea by Amílcar Cabral, the city was often referred to as the “Mecca of the Revolution”, while Manuel Alegre called it the “capital of utopia”. Many of these temporary residents spoke Portuguese, having arrived from Portugal and Brazil, where they fought dictatorships, and from the then Portuguese colonies in Africa, where they fought for freedom and independence. This article takes a panoramic look at this reality. |
