description “Law and order” in the US is at the same time a political issue owned by the Right and a matter of consensus across the political spectrum. To understand this cognitive dissonance, this article attempts to make an historiographical assessment and to move beyond the dominant paradigm of polarization. By delineating the origins of contemporary crime ideology, we hope to understand how law and order politics both contributed to the resurgence of the Republican party and to the transformation of the whole political landscape since World War II.
