| Summary: | The settlement velocity of discrete particles in water is an important parameter that is used in the design of water and wastewater settlement tanks and for the general environmental modeling of solids particles transport in water medium. The determination of particle settlement velocity is generally dependent on the flow regimes, with the transition region particularly not amenable to explicit expression. This paper presents a method for direct explicit solution to particle settlement velocity equation for the transitional flow region by solving a four-degree polynomial equation. The method is extended further through a similar four-degree polynomial power form equation developed and that is applicable to the entire flow region. This generalized power form equation has greater number of parameters that will enable better data fit for experiments that consider wide range of particle shapes and sizes. Comparison of the velocity estimation of the proposed method indicates its advantage in terms of reducing the overall error of estimation of particle settlement velocity. The overall percentage error of velocity estimation of the proposed equation is 3.86% which is less than the percentage error achieved by earlier researchers such as Cheng. Examination of individual errors also show the proposed method has lower percentage error compared to earlier proposed methods. |
