Imam Tirmidhi holds a distinguished position among the scholars of Hadith, and his renowned compilation Al-Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhi occupies a prominent place in the Hadith literature. As one of the eminent Imams of Hadith, he had extensive access to Hadith sources and significantly contributed to the development of Hadith terminology. He introduced several technical terms and classifications, and his scholarly stature is evident in his close association with great Hadith authorities, including his teacher Imam al-Bukhārī, who referred to him with high regard, even bestowing upon him the title of Amīr al-Mu’minīn fī al-Ḥadīth. One of Imam Tirmidhi's notable contributions is the use of the term "Ḥasan Ṣaḥīḥ", which continues to be a subject of scholarly debate. Although various scholars have attempted to interpret this term, its precise meaning remains a point of contention. Interestingly, references to this term can be found even prior to Imam Tirmidhi, but he appears to have employed it with a unique connotation. A thorough analysis of Al-Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhi, along with the examination of the chains of transmission (isnāds) and the contexts in which Imam Tirmidhi uses the term, is crucial for understanding his intended meaning. This paper seeks to explore and clarify the usage of “Ḥasan Ṣaḥīḥ” in Imam Tirmidhi’s methodology, highlighting the need for further critical research in this area.
