Summary:Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have created a new kind of social activism: slacktivism. Slacktivism is when young people support a cause on social media at low risk and low cost, with the goal of raising awareness, driving change, or gaining personal satisfaction. In the first part of the article, the authors review literature on slacktivism. The second part puts the two trends in the literature into perspective. The authors’ work suggests that slacktivism is a new form of online engagement that allows individuals to have a big impact with very little effort.
