description This article inquires how International Relations theories – realism, liberalism, conventional constructivism and critical perspectives – understand the resurgence of walls and fences in the 21st century. This article seeks also to bridge the gap for a dialogue between International Relations theories and geopolitical approaches which are devoted to understand space and borders. Despite the increasing proliferation of walls and fences in international relations, this phenomenon remains theoretically overlooked in general and especially with regards to International Relations. Building on International Relations theories and geopolitics’ assumptions, this article offers a conceptual map divided by two possible objectives that scholars and students could endeavor in their research: explaining causes or critique walls and fences.
