description In this study, we propose a biometric authentication system that uses chest wall displacement recorded by a wearable electromagnetic near-field sensor (NFS) module with a very high frequency (VHF)-band small-loop antenna. The NFS module can record the change in the input impedance of the antenna as a time-series personal distinctive NFS signal based on the variations in the near-field between the wall and the antenna, with minimal restrictions. The proposed system also includes activity recognition using the signal to select an optimal classification model for authentication based on the states for the user. To evaluate the possibility of using NFS signals for the proposed system, we recruited 13 participants in the experiment and recorded their NFS signals while resting and working in non-resting states. We then applied non-fiducial techniques and classification algorithms to the signals under both intra- and inter-recording states. As a result, the proposed system was capable of authentication for the 13 participants with the equal error rates of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.061\pm 0.044$ </tex-math></inline-formula> in resting and <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.088\pm 0.072$ </tex-math></inline-formula> in working states.
